Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5th September 1888 in a Telugu speaking recruiting Brahmin family in a place called Pulianguri in the then Madras Presidency. Her father was Sarvapalli Biraswamy and her mother’s name was Sarvapalli Sita (Sitamma).

He spent his early life in Tirupati. His father was the treasurer of the local zamindar. Primary Education – K.V. High School, Thiruttani.

Higher Primary Education – Hermansberg Evangelical Lutheran Mission School, Tirupati and Government Higher Secondary School, Walajapet. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was very intelligent. He received many scholarships in his educational life and with the help of those scholarships he continued his studies.

His family’s financial situation was not very prosperous. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan got a philosophy book from a distant grandfather and then he decided to read about philosophy. Radhakrishnan wrote a dissertation on The Ethics of the Vedanta and its Metaphysical Presuppositions for a master’s degree.

Radhakrishnan thought his research paper would be rejected by the professor of philosophy. But Professor Alfred George Hogg was very happy to read his article. Radhakrishnan was 20 years old when this article was published.

 At the age of 16, Radhakrishnan married one of his distant sisters, Shivakamu. They had five daughters and one son (Sarvapalli Gopal). They have been married for 51 years.

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan career

 In 1909, Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan was appointed Professor of Philosophy in the Madras Presidency College. He then taught at the University of Mysore, the University of Calcutta, the University of Oxford, the University of Chicago and others. At that time he was the first Indian to teach at the University of Oxford. During his time at the University of Mysore, he wrote several journals – The Quest, Journal of Philosophy and International Journal of Ethics.

Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan started politics after his successful career. He represented independent India at UNESCO. After India became independent in 1947, he was the first Vice President of independent India (period: 1952–1962).
